News Writing Workshop in collaboration with UNESCO Nepal at St. Xavier’s College

    EDUCAST, Aiming to enhance the news writing skills of Journalism students to further improve the quality of reporting in Nepal, a two-day news writing workshop has started in St. Xavier’s College in collaboration with UNESCO Nepal from Wednesday The fourth edition of the workshop is being attended by a total of 27 students from Host College as well as other government and community-colleges. This workshop also marks the first collaboration between the UNESCO Office in Kathmandu and St. Xavier’s in organizing the workshop.

    “Apart from the lecture based learning method, we have been practicing project- based pedagogy to enhance the quality of education that we are delivering. This workshop also comes in line with our determination to provide quality education with effect. I believe that this workshop provides students with practical skills that will be invaluable in their journalistic career,” said Chun Bahadur Gurung, Faculty lead and workshop coordinator.

    This workshop covers a wide range of topics from pitching story ideas to drafting compelling and impactful stories, aimed at positively impacting and encouraging students pursuing journalism and enhancing the quality of journalism in Nepal. Through interactive and practical sessions led by Bhadra Sharma, a journalist working with The New York Times; Louisa Kamal, an accomplished writer and editor as well as an educator and Naresh Newar, a senior communication specialist, the workshop also aims to empower aspiring journalists by equipping them with valuable knowledge and necessary tools for accurate, impactful and ethical reporting.

    A total of 16 students from the St. Xavier’s College and 10 students from community colleges inside the Kathmandu Valley are participating in the workshop selected from an open call for expression in late August by the College.

    “Non-credit courses like this workshop are crucial in enhancing the teaching-learning process.

    They offer students hands-on experience and valuable insights, helping them become not only skilled journalists but also thoughtful communicators. Writing is the core of storytelling, and this workshop aims to develop both,” Saluja Chand, acting Principal of St. Xavier’s highlighted addressing the inauguration session.

    A total of 17 students from Namuna Machhindra Campus, Madan Bhandari Memorial College, Ratna Rajya Laxmi Campus and Nepal Commerce Campus are undergoing the workshop being held at St. Xavier’s College, Maitighar.Pen named Louisa Kamal, Lesley Junlakan remarked, “As educators, we serve as signposts for our students, guiding them towards their potential paths. This workshop is one such signpost, providing direction and support as students explore the field of journalism.”
