EDUCAST, Former Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, and current Standing Committee Member of CPN-UML, Sher Bahadur Tamang, emphasized that operating morning classes could be a pathway to improving school education in Nepal.

In an informal discussion with education journalists today, Tamang suggested altering school timings based on seasonal variations. He proposed that during winter, classes should run from 8 AM to 2 PM, while in summer, they should start earlier, from 7 AM to 1 PM.

According to Tamang, introducing morning classes and replacing mid-day snacks with full lunches prepared by students on a rotational basis would foster a sense of responsibility and teamwork. He added that such an approach could eliminate caste-based discrimination by promoting equality through shared dining experiences.

Tamang highlighted that this model could also enhance teachers’ effectiveness, as they would have afternoons free for agricultural or vocational work, thus encouraging consistent attendance and productivity. Additionally, he suggested using school premises after hours for vocational training programs to benefit both students and the local community.

The former minister further proposed making moral education mandatory to instill ethical values among students and create responsible citizens. He advocated for piloting this model in select schools over three years to assess its impact on educational quality and student behavior.

Education journalists present at the meeting welcomed Tamang’s suggestions and recommended implementing this model as a pilot project in a few schools before broader adoption.
