EDUCAST, Following the death of Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal, tensions escalated at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, India. Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student, was found dead on Sunday night, leading to protests from Nepali students.

The college, in its official statement, claimed that Lamsal had died by suicide and cited her alleged romantic involvement with a fellow student. However, an extensive police investigation is ongoing.

In the aftermath, Nepali students residing in the hostel were reportedly expelled due to the unrest. This prompted intervention from the Nepalese Embassy in New Delhi, which engaged with KIIT’s administration to ensure that the students could remain on campus. The discussions resulted in an agreement allowing Nepali students to continue staying in the hostel and attend their classes without disruption.

Amid growing pressure, KIIT has now appealed to the expelled students to return, stating that it does not support their removal and wants them to continue their education at the institution. “Leaving the college or making alternative plans is not the solution. We request all Nepali students to return and participate in academic activities,” the college stated.

Lamsal’s death remains under investigation, and authorities have assured a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
