EDUCAST, The UK Home Office is increasing the financial maintenance requirements for international students applying under the Student Visa route. Effective November 30, international applicants will need to demonstrate higher available funds to cover their living expenses, reflecting the rising cost of living across the United Kingdom. Under the revised regulations, students planning to study at universities within London will see their monthly living cost requirement rise from £1,529 to £1,570.

For full-time programs lasting nine months or longer, the maximum total proof-of-funds requirement in London will grow from £13,761 to £14,130—an annual increase of £369. Students attending institutions outside London are also subject to updated figures. The monthly living allowance for these areas will increase from £1,171 to £1,203.

Over a standard nine-month academic period, this raises the maximum maintenance threshold from £10,539 to £10,827, marking an additional cost of £288. Immigration experts emphasize that these financial maintenance funds are strictly dedicated to living costs and must be held in addition to outstanding university tuition fees. Applicants must also account for separate statutory payments, including the official UK Student Visa application fee and the mandatory Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).

To meet the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) compliance standards, students must hold the required sum—combining first-year tuition balance and full maintenance funds—in an eligible account for at least 28 consecutive days. The end date of this 28-day holding period must fall within 31 days of submitting the online visa application. Funds may be demonstrated through personal accounts, parental bank statements, official student loans, or approved financial sponsorships. However, applicants who have lived legally in the UK for at least 12 months at the time of applying are generally exempt from providing maintenance proof.
