EDUCAST, According to the Budget 2026 announced by the UK Government on October 28, the 2-year Graduate Visa route will remain intact for international students graduating from high-compliance universities. Previously, the UK government had announced plans to reduce the Graduate Visa duration from two years to 18 months starting January 2027. However, the new budget statement clarifies that graduates from universities with strong labour market outcomes and high compliance rates will retain the full two-year visa duration instead of the reduced 18 months.

Under the new policy, specific criteria determining how high-compliance universities will be designated and which institutions will be included are yet to be fully detailed. The government aims to position the UK as Europe’s most welcoming destination for highly skilled workers. Furthermore, the scope and quota cap of the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa will be expanded to attract graduates from the top 150 global institutions.

This decision is considered crucial for thousands of Nepali students currently studying or planning to pursue higher education in the UK. Presently, UK universities operate under strict Basic Compliance Assessment (BCA) requirements to maintain their Student Sponsor Licences. According to Holly Chandler, Director of Strategic Policy at the Russell Group, protecting high-compliance universities from reduced graduate post-study work periods will safeguard the UK’s international education sector and help connect skilled graduates directly to the British workforce.
