Germany Extends €8 Million Relief Package to Nepal Following Bhotekoshi Floods

EDUCAST, The Federal Republic of Germany has announced a comprehensive assistance package worth 8 million euros (EUR) to support Nepalese communities affected by the recent Bhotekoshi floods. The support combines immediate emergency relief, humanitarian funding, and long-term development cooperation.

Following a request from the Government of Nepal, Germany has mobilized over EUR 500,000 in emergency assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Relief supplies delivered include kitchen sets, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, camp beds, and drinking-water equipment provided by the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), the German Life Saving Association (DLRG), and the German Federal State of Thuringia.

Additionally, Germany is providing EUR 200,000 to direct civil society initiatives:

• Maternal and Newborn Health: Funding emergency supplies, essential healthcare access, and infection control for pregnant women, new mothers, and infants impacted by the flood.
• EU Humanitarian Response (DG ECHO): Creating local income opportunities, restoring infrastructure, and upgrading living conditions in displacement camps.

To address long-term recovery, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has allocated an additional EUR 7.35 million in development assistance. Implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), this funding will target the restoration and maintenance of essential health services, energy, and water supplies. The initiative also aims to enhance Nepal’s climate and disaster resilience against future natural events.

Germany further contributes via multilateral channels. Following the disaster, the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF)—to which Germany is a major contributor—mobilized USD 2.5 million, while the European Union allocated EUR 2.5 million.

Highlighting the deep ties between both nations, the German Embassy in Kathmandu noted that several German civil society organizations and private donors are actively working alongside local partners and Nepalese authorities to deliver targeted, on-the-ground assistance.
